colleen roate :: meet the artist :: studio tour

meet colleen, resident artist @ urban sassafras

colleen upcycles old furniture into display-worthy works of brightly-colored eye candy for any bedroom! here she talks about her love affair with crayons, the color green, & the importance of family.

How long have you been a self-described artist? Can you remember the very first thing you ever made?
I think my mom described me as an artist long before I did. I’ve loved making things for as long as I can remember. I don’t remember my first project, but I can tell ya I had a Crayola Caddy that held crayons, markers, paint, and colored pencils; plus it spun around … awesome!! It was probably my favorite toy.

What is your favorite medium/media to work in? Why?
I love to paint. I love how it can so quickly transform the look of something.

What is your favorite color palette & why?
My favorite color is green. Always has been. So I guess I lean more toward the cooler end of the spectrum. However, color is sort of my thing. I don’t understand people who decorate in white.

What do you think separates “good” from “exceptional” art?
“Good” art is what everyone is doing. “Exceptional” art is what no one is doing at the time but then everyone wants to.

What is your greatest achievement outside of art?
My family. I still can’t believe it’s mine … one that I created or helped to create. They drive me crazy but they are my crazy. It’s really something to watch yourself thrown back at you through another smaller person.
