air plants :: diy

is your green thumb a little brown? if you have trouble keeping plants alive, air plants, aka "tilly", are here to make you look good. these lovelies don't need soil, so you can display them in a variety of different arrangements.

you can purchase air plants on etsy or at urban sass. there are a variety of different types of tillies, but all of them are easy peasy to keep alive!

when you first get your air plant(s), you will want to soak in room temperature, distilled water for about 15 minutes. i have been lazy and used water from the faucet before. this is fine too, however sometimes the chemicals (chlorine) in the faucet water can harm the plants, so if you have time, set the water out for a day before soaking your plants. do this once a week.

after removing from the water, you may want to lightly spritz with a fertilizer. i find this helps tremendously during the winter months. the air seems to be humid enough the rest of the year that i can get away without fertilizing.

your plants should be kept and displayed where there is good air circulation. natural, indirect light is best.

so, what do you think? ready to try out a tilly?! if so, i can't wait to hear how it goes. be sure to share!
