geometric matte :: diy

as some of you know, framing can be expensive! even if you find a good deal on a frame, having a matte cut can really take you over budget. so! today, i'm sharing how to cut your own mattes so that you can spend more on the art (which is what really matters anyway).

also, how fun is the geometric matte pictured above?! see, the great thing about cutting your own mattes is that you can create any shape you want!

  1. begin with a sold piece of matte board. you can buy this in all sorts of colors at any hobby store.
  2. measure and mark to the size of your frame. you can easily do this by tracing the actual glass onto the back of the board.
  3. using a straight edge and a knife, gently begin cutting your matte. you will go over the same path several times to get a clean cut. if you push too hard and go too fast, your cut will be crooked or jagged.
  4. now draw your framing shape on the back of your small matte board
  5. repeat step 3 so that you now have a hollow shape where your print will be displayed
  6. tape your print to the back of the matte and stick in frame.
