circle photo :: diy

i don't know about you, but a gallery wall full of square frames full of square mattes around square pictures makes me feel pretty bored. i've been slowly collecting different items to add to my square walls... things like fabric weavings, 3-dimensional art, etc. it's looking pretty good, but i decided to mix it up even more with my new vacation pics!

do you have a photo editing program of any sort? if so, you can do it too... here's how:

  1. open your photo in your editing program of choice (photoshop is used in the pics above)
  2. use a circular selection tool to frame the part of the image you want to be "framed". note: if you don't see this right away in your tool bar, check under the regular square selection tool - you have all sorts of options!
  3. to get a perfect circle in photoshop, you'll want to hold down the "shift" key while selecting your section
  4. once you are satisfied with the area selected, you will select the inverse. a short cut in photoshop to do this is ctrl+alt+i (this selects all of the area that is not in your circle... so outside your circle)
  5. next, create a new layer on top of your picture layer. make sure your new layer is highlighed when you move onto #6.
  6. now, go to your fill tool (it looks like a bucket about to spill paint). click on the outside of your circle and the entire inverse selection should fill with your color of choice.
  7. flatten your layers, crop if desired and save.

i plan to print mine out and frame in square (i know, i'm lame) frames - no matte needed! i'll try to remember to show you a final pic of the gallery when it's complete.

questions? comment below and i'll try to help! xo
