hammer & nail :: diy

if you know me, you know i have a minor obsession with all industrial stylings. i find that metal is the perfect way to add interest to old barnwood, so today i'm sharing how to do just that!

with the fall season coming up, i chose to design a leaf shape, however, you can create anything you want! i'm sure you've seen DIY's similar to this for string art... i find this a little more mature. maybe it's the subtle coloring? or a less 'crafty' appearance? whatever it is, i'm in love. you too? let's get down to business:

you'll need:

  • small wood pallet (make your own or purchase in hobby store)
  • nails with different size heads
  • hammer
  • pencil for sketching

the DIY details:
  1. begin by sketching out your design. take note to the size of your nail heads... if they are large, you will want to make your sketch spacious to account for that.
  2. begin hammering in your large nails for the general shape. then use your smaller ones for the detailing.
  3. note: i hammered my nails all the way in. you can leave yours up a bit for a more 3D look, however i've never been good at getting them straight. it's just easier for me to flatten them.
