sock puppet craft kit :: diy

question: how many times has your kiddo pulled a party invite out of his/her backpack, all crinkled and tore... promptly announcing "so & so's" birthday party is this weekend!?

well, sure son/daughter you can attend... but when the hell am i going to get to the store and buy, a child that i don't know, a gift? i mean, it's not like us mom's have anything else to do... am i right?

i am wrong. sorely wrong. SO! a couple years ago, i started creating "kits" for unexpected birthdays. i can't tell you how many times this has come in handy. the trick is, making a kit that boy and girl, no matter what age, will like.

and well, who doesn't like a sock monkey? no one, that's who. they are funny and cute and stupid and awkward. but they demand imagination and every child likes to use that! this last time around, i made up 5 sock monkey kits and it took me about an hour. truth is, you probably have most of the items lying around your house already.

here's what you'll need:

  • sock - you know, like the dress socks that you bought your husband but he never wore.
  • felt - go ahead and cut out ears, bows, noses, whatever you want
  • puff balls
  • buttons
  • googly eyes
  • yarn
  • glue
  • a box or bag for cute packaging
  • and if you want to get really cute, a camera, computer & printer

the DIY steps:
  1. throw all your supplies on the table and get to work. i simply glued fun ears, eyes, yarn etc. onto my sock as an example for the kiddos.
  2. put a little of each item into a box
  3. take a picture of your sock monkey example (or, skip step #1 and just find an example online)
  4. print your example and cut out
  5. tape to box
  6. set aside for future awesome gift giving!
