thanksgiving pictionary :: diy

are you ready for thanksgiving? will you spend the day cooking or visiting or both? i love this holiday as an adult, but i remember being bored and starved for most of the day as a child. my dad took over our tv with football games and my mom was in the kitchin preparing... which left my brother and i to irritate each other!

in anticipation of this happening with my boys, i have come up with a few games to keep them busy until dinner. i'm sharing one today and i hope you enjoy! kiddos can use this game as pictionary (which is what we have planned on our chalkboard) or even charades if drawing gets frustrating.

here's what you'll need:

  • a painted mason jar. i chose a brownish for my turkey. simply paint the inside with a brush. easy peasy.
  • popsicle sticks.
  • assorted colors of paint, including white
  • felt for beak & gobbler
  • googly eyes, buttons, or felt balls for eyes
  • scissors
  • hot glue

the steps:
  1. paint each popsicle stick with your assorted colors
  2. on one side use white paint to make polka-dots. this will help you keep the turkey's 'feathers' facing the same direction. that way, no one can peek.
  3. while your paint dries, cut your beak & gobbler from felt
  4. adhere eyes, beak & gobbler using hot glue
  5. now write thanksgiving themed words on the opposite side of your popsicle sticks.
  6. place in jar and you're set to play!

how to play:
  • each player takes turns drawing a feather out of the turkey jar.
  • do not show anyone else your feather
  • set a timer for an allotted amount of time (this can depend on age range of players)
  • draw or act out the thanksgiving word on your feather
  • the other players will try to guess what the drawing/acting player is communicating.
  • that's it! no teams, winners or loosers. just a fun game!

happy thanksgiving friends! gobble, gobble!
